Language remains potentially a communicative medium capable of expressing ideas and concepts as well as moods, feelings and attitudes. English is a lingua franca, a window to the world and a link language. In this present day scenario, a technical student without English competence is like a fish out of water, losing her significance. The student of Engineering and Technology needs a specific set of language skills for success in education and career. With a view to developing students’ competence in LSRW Skills in English, the Multimedia Language Lab was set up. In the Lab the students are given training with the help of software materials in addition to the aid of the teacher. The JNTU English Curriculum develops the students’ ability to communicate and also fosters a strong liberal arts background. Such a background gives students not only marketable communication skills but also an understanding of the history and development of civilization. COMMUNICATION SKILLS LAB In the global context, students of Engineering and Technology need a specific set of language skills for their success in education and career. English for Science and Technology (EST) poses a challenge to them. Industries are also voicing their concerns about the need for better communication skills among students of Engineering. Students of Engineering and Technology are the main stakeholders of EST. The professional profile of a modern qualified engineer should include well-developed communication skills and high English language proficiency to help achieve success in the modern highly competitive global work arena. When we open our mind to new ways of seeing things, we open our communication and improve our relationships. This more open communication will be reflected in writing, speaking, presenting materials and even in research and development of a work product. We can put these new ways of seeing into Team Building, Negotiating, Interviewing and Writing investigative reports. The students will be trained for one year and at the end of the year each and every student will be able to develop comprehension, improve vocabulary, develop grammatical ability, enhance writing skills, correspond with others and enhance skills in Spoken English.
