About BS Department

The Department of Basic Science aims to provide a broad base in the natural sciences and Communicative English to all the undergraduates of Engineering disciplines. The highly qualified and experienced faculty facilitates the students’ in-depth conceptual knowledge through interactive teaching-learning processes. The Department enables the students to handle complicated situations and solutions with a thorough knowledge of fundamentals in Mathematics, Engineering Physics, Engineering Chemistry, Environmental Science and Communicative English. A strong team with Ph.D. holders and some in the stage of completion and the rest enrolled in research programs.


Mastering English language is very important for engineering students to achieve success in their academic and later their professional pursuits. With this well-known fact in view, the faculty of English in the department enable the students, especially from the rural background, to gain competence and confidence in the use of English language. The students’ abilities in WOVEN- written, oral, verbal, electronic and nonverbal skills are honed through interactive classroom and lab sessions. In addition to the curricular activities, the department of Basic Science trains students for competitive examinations such as BEC, GRE, TOEFL, GATE. Training in foreign languages – Spanish, French, German and Japanese is offered by the department in collaboration with experts in the field. 

Engineering Mathematics

Engineering Mathematics is considered as basis for all branches of engineering as it encompasses theoretical principles underlying many real time applications. It is in fact the art of applying mathematics to complex real-world problems.It combines mathematical theory, practical engineering and scientific computing to address today’s technological challenges. A strong foundation in Mathematics at entry level enables an Engineering student have a fruitful academic career at lateral levels and subsequently make a correct choice for his / her professional arena.


Keeping this as the main objective, the Mathematics team of Basic Science Department is striving to cater to the needs of students of all branches of engineering and also that of Management studies. Having its presence since the inception of the institution, the team has since grown in size as well as in reputation with  faculty members who are well qualified and fully experienced in the areas of Mathematics as well as Statistics, the team is certainly one of the most sought after  in the institute.

The subjects that are handled as a part of regular engineering curriculum are Engineering Mathematics, Probability and Statistics, Quantitative techniques and Research methodology. Also, the team members are actively involved in training the students for placements and other competitive exams.

Engineering Physics

It aims at enhancing students understanding and application of the natural phenomena to develop new engineering solutions in society. Engineering physics covers a wide array of specialty topics such as Optics, Quantum Physics, Materials Science, Applied Mechanics, Nanotechnology, Micro Fabrication, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biophysics, Control Theory, Aerodynamics, Energy, Solid-State Physics. The discipline is also meant for cross-functionality and bridges the gap between theoretical science and practical engineering with emphasis in research and development, design, and analysis.

Engineering Chemistry

An engineer uses chemistry to transform raw materials into usable products such as plastics, drugs, fertilizers, foods and petrochemicals. Engineers use chemistry to design and construct plants and to design and perform experiments, with the aim of creating innovative and improved methods of production, resource conservation and pollution control.

Chemistry helps engineers create processes that are environmentally friendly or more profitable and more efficient. It's also useful when it comes to industrial research; waste management; and in the production, transformation, transportation and proper use of chemicals. With the help of chemistry, engineers create materials and techniques essential in fields such as fuel cell, nanotechnology and bio-engineering.

Environmental Science

It becomes very relevant in a world that is dominated by change at an unprecedented pace. To keep up with the growing populations and higher standards of living, pressure on the environment is increasing.  Environmental problems are real, controversial and need intelligent solutions. The study of how physical and biological processes maintain life, and how humans affect nature, requires the interdisciplinary course of Environmental Science. This course helps engineering students gain a deeper appreciation of nature, how to use resources with maximum competence and logic, minimum risk and least cost in the protection and control of the iosphere.. Thus, aid in the survival of the civilization as we know it.
